Happy Days

October 18, 2007 / by domsumners

sadly i am not referring to this but my mood having completed two massive projects this week. Both went through some choppy waters and in fact all the major major web projects/build/campaigns i have been involved in over 6-7 years have all had their times of heightened tension/delays/late changes to brief etc. What is it about big web initiatives that make them so difficult compared to more traditional fayre.

  • it is my fault - everyone else's web projects go smoothly (please god - let that not be the case!)
  • As its "major", lots of stakeholders get involved internally and externally - their input is valuable but sometimes not well timed or productive
  • By definition these things are new and innovative and therefore are scrutinised much more carefully.
  • They involve change. And a lot of people wish to avoid this word.
  • Suppliers. Dare i say that web suppliers like builders have their own set of rules on delivery times and responsiveness to enquiries (not OME obviously!)
  • Desire for Perfection. Sometimes (not always) you just need to "Go Live" and modify after real life results can be analysed.

Clearly these have gone live, perfect and on time......
