Thanks Peter - i think the answer is "no" we don't want to be full service. At present if its a simple adjunct to our core work and we can deliver it simply then it makes sense to do the work. Outside of this we will say no thanks and concentrate on our core product. As Sean (co founder) constantly tells me - i sometimes have difficulty saying no to a profitable business opportunity! but i am getting better.
i think we are going to have to agree to disagree but you are miles wide of the mark if you are trying to portray me as some whacky online evangelist of the media world.
Let me be clear
i love newspapers i buy at least one every day and consume about three while travelling, eating etc and i disagree with the views of people who think we will all be consuming content this way.
But...
Weekly appointment sections are a not very efficient way for companies or candidates to "meet" and exchange details. And this means that the appointment sections are in (will be in??) terminal decline.
Newsprint owners should and are exploiting their local press vehicles for as much profit as possible for as long as possible - and make sure they own the market dominant online properties that will replace them. And that to me appears to me to be what they are doing.
Anyway - thanks for the comment and i am enjoying the debate.
Tim
Thanks for the comment
A biased view - its a fair cop i suppose but let me be quite clear i firmly believe that there is no reason why local papers should be any different to other recruitment print areas and the decline we are seeing will lead to "decimation" - a dramatic word but i believe an accurate one. Newsquest are a major shareholder in CareerBuilder currently No1 in US and being invested in heavily in UK so maybe investing rather than buying may have been more accurate.
I am going to write an entry over weekend about the stages of migration and that the "integration" phase comes shortly (define - what shortly means?) before replacement!
There is plenty of business for local press for a period of time but the massive push currently happening online will accelerate the decline of that there is no doubt.
very good point Rich - its us as people who wish to access this audience for our grubby needs than the site wanted to position itself as such. But we are now all well aware that no matter how philanthropic an online business starts as - at some point relatively early on - they try and monetize the traffic and commercially exploit the traffic - ie FRUjobs or probably a better example Google
cheers Peter! comments always welcome...i think.
To answer the point - i am aware of this type of linking not being effective - and i would answer your comment by saying that the main purpose of this blog is not to improve the SEO of the OMExperts site. Its to provide a forum, a sounding board and show understanding of the major issues of the space we operate in.
Dom
yes - a brief trawl through the dross that certain organisations run on websites - its no surprise that their adverts never get seen - let alone replied to
Richard
The other method is to to start small and very very focused and grow organically out of there. Sadly this takes time and commitment - both qualities a lot of online companies lack!
