I promise I will try and drag this headline into something relevant to online recruitment. OME is based in the Business Design Centre which is currently hosting the CBI Conference this week. So we have had ringside seats to speeches by Gordon Brown, David Cameron, and Alastair Darling among others.
In the last 12 months, there was a massive backlash against the slickness ("spin") of Tony Blair and I guess that was partly responsible for Brown's initial success as PM. He positioned himself as straight talking honest etc or the anti Blair. Whereas Cameron was seen to be "heir to Blair" and aping a figure who we no longer wanted.
However having heard them speak at close quarters this week and consequent to a huge turn around in the polls - you can sort of sew why that initial success was perhaps temporary.
The most obvious thing is you cannot listen to Brown without switching off and thinking of what you are having for tea and other key personal decisions whereas Cameron is an engaging speaker - a nice line in self deprecation and keeps your attention much longer.
Now how important is that? - shouldn’t it be about policies and ideas not presentation ability and communication? Well yes and no - you can have the best policies in the world but if nobody is listening then it matters not. And sorry to say but likeability is important in our politicians - we don’t like to admit it but it is true.
OK - I promised to bring this back home - so here goes...the people I have worked with over last ten years who knew most about online are absolutely not the people who have been the most successful. Many of them in fact knew too much or perhaps more accurately wanted to show much they knew and got frustrated when the clients were not up to speed. The uber successful ones were those who could communicate the topic in an easy to understand way and could make things happen even if it was not the 100% solution.
So yes - content/delivery/policy are the key but they are worth absolutely nothing if you cannot communicate it - concisely and clearly.
